Resumo:Examines the implications of takeovers and mergers on a regional economy. Shows that there are often systematic forces at work in the external takeover of (and by) regional companies and that the process has quantifiable effects on both the companies concerned and on regional growth and development as a whole. Using the Scotch whisky industry as a study, the conclusion is that the policy issues involved are much wider than competition policy has thus far allowed for.
