| Summary: | The "Lives" of the artists published by the Roman painter Giovanni Baglione in 1642 collect over two hundred biographies of painters, sculptors, architects, decorators and engravers active in Rome between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The book, divided by pontificate - from that of Gregory XIII Boncompagni (1572-1585) to that of Urban VIII Barberini (1623-1644) - gives an account of the extraordinary artistic and monumental heritage of Rome, accompanying the grandiose transformations of the city during the crucial of the transition from mannerism to baroque, and providing a very rich catalog of works that includes churches, palaces, fountains, sculptures, marble and bronze furnishings, fresco cycles, altarpieces, and products of the most refined decorative arts. Starting from the specificity of the Roman context, universal as the seat of the Church, the book therefore illuminates a crucial period of the entire Italian and European artistic culture, including, for example, the first printed biographies of great masters such as Annibale Carracci and Caravaggio, who Baglione as a painter had as a model and with whom he clashed and rivaled, but also the Flemish Rubens or architects and sculptors such as Domenico Fontana, Giacomo Della Porta and Pietro Bernini. This first annotated edition of the entire text, aimed at guaranteeing maximum accessibility and ease of consultation as a whole and created thanks to the contribution of dozens of specialists, lays the concrete premises for a new season of studies on the seventeenth century. |
